A theme thought

17:58 Tuesday 18 Apr 06

I think I’ve got rid of the redundant css. If you see any, do let me know :)

A thought: why don’t theme authors produce one theme with all the changeable bits in one easy place and have other options there too? Example:
I have now this css you can see. The font-family, sizes, colours are spread through the css. Let’s say I had all that information in one commented area called /* Essentials */ Now, let’s say I had another ‘look’ that used exactly the same framework but had a different font-family, different size, colours etc. If that was in a commented /* Essentials option 2 */ section, all someone need do is change the commenting and bingo – new look. If you put the image locations there then again you could change the look without changing the structure. It would actually be many themes in one (like those humungous pens with many colours). Does that make sense? You aren’t making multi-themes as much as one theme with lots of outfits. That sound good? Worth doing? (not me – you :) ) And how about if all theme authors were asked to do that ….

Changing the theme

21:08 Monday 17 Apr 06

Theme… that’s a bit good for a kludge of css. This is not the one I was working on – that is still inside Xampp. I realised though that I was actually quite attached to the last layout … a bit like that pair of trainers which are well past their usefulness but you can’t quite throw them into the bin … so this is a stopgap. It might be more stop than gap. Who knows….

Anyway, recent comments / posts are now on a page of their own to tidy the sidebar. That negates their usefulness apparently but if I’d got rid I’d have wanted them back. I had 2 About pages – I now have one. A couple of pages that were outside WP have been brought into WP. Others may or may not follow. The sidebar has been tidied, links checked and several removed (I have many vacancies….) and the whole thing is now much wider. 900px from 772px. That means the text size is off probably so I need to play there. And I really do need to sort out the css – it’s horrendous. Truly bad. Really. I hate the navbar css.

So.. it all looks new. And you know what? I don’t think it’s that bad either :)

New theme?

16:31 Saturday 8 Apr 06

I have finally found a theme I really like – one look and it was “Wow – I want that!” I’ve checked about a quarter of the things I want it to do – because it’ll work somewhat differently to this current incarnation – but it’s looking good. About time I made a change as the bones of this go back about 2 years to Root and Gemini. Can’t decide whether to do a parallel install here or use Xampp. If I wasn’t so knackered from the gym – my pectorals still hurt from the other day – I would stand a chance of getting it done tonight..

Update: Screw this. It seems that at least one plugin needs wp2. So I export all what you see inc the db, install that on localhost. That’s this machine – the one I’m touching right now. And it goes sssssssslllllllooooooowwwwwwww. I have suspicions about rewrite rules too. All I want is for a blog to work. Those last 4 letters in that sentence are ….. essential.

Update#2: I’m really tired so my troubleshooting tolerance can be measured in only a few very short things. I will try …..

IP question.

12:11 Thursday 23 Mar 06

You know when a comment is submitted in WP that a whois link is supplied for the IP? I’ve a question about that.
I don’t normally click them but a comment in the last few hours raised my eyebrows a touch so I clicked it: http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=198.54.202.18. The commenter left no url, just a gmail address. The other bit of info from WP was cbs-cache1-vif1.saix.net. I’m not sure if this is a legit comment or a spammer trying to get me to leave the doors open. The post concerned is the one titled “Advanced Cell Therapeutics”.

I broke. I fixed.

10:46 Monday 6 Mar 06

I was tinkering around removing functions from inside WP a few days ago – and I removed at least one too many – who’d have known the_author() was in so many places? Nicki let me know and all is now reverted from a backup. I’ll be more careful next time. Maybe.

123-Reg. Bunch of Muppets

19:35 Friday 24 Feb 06

Considering 123-Reg.co.uk ? Don’t. Avoid them.

Last December I moved domain registrars for this domain and D’s – also a .uk – to 123-reg. I can’t recall exactly why I moved them then, but I did. Just after moving, I tried to ‘Opt-out’ from the WHOIS database that Nominet keep so my privacy would be a little higher. Despite the system saying I was successful, it was not. I tried several times and each time it said all was good it was not. So I emailed their support – they said it was broken and to give it 24 hours. So I did. It was still broken.
I’m fairly good at writing down how things went wrong and how I can repeat it (must be all that hanging around in forums..) so I detailed precisely what I was doing and emailed again. Muppet#1 at 123-Reg sent me a reply which told me how to Opt-out – it was exactly what I had written. 123-Reg have a support line which costs 50pence a minute – I have a feeling I’d have got an answer if I’d rang. Anyway, I fume silently and forget about it. Few weeks later I try again – their system STILL says I have opted out when I again go through the process but I am not. So again I email. Muppet#2 tells me I’m doing it wrong and spells out just what I need to do in order to Opt-out. Spookily, it’s exactly the same steps I said were not working. Hmm. So I forgot again – until Tuesday. Trying again, failing again and seeing the typed-out-slowly email from Muppet#3 which AGAIN gets it totally wrong, I blogged for a recommendation. As a result of that, Simon emails me. Turns out that my domain registration had lapsed. I am really grateful to Simon for that email – I would very probably have missed it.

So in December I move a registration to 123-Reg and in February, without telling me anything at all, they let that registration lapse. Am I missing something before I say that 123-reg are obviously a bunch of complete incompetents ? Aren’t registrars meant to tell you ? I know when I was with easily.co.uk that their emails were incessant (if they weren’t so damn expensive I’d have stayed with them). So 123-Reg are allowing an element of my internet identity to disappear from my grasp without bothering to let me know. There is nothing anywhere on their site to indicate anything is wrong either. Because of the opt-out issue I’m certainly not happy for the 123-Idiots to look after things so I find another registrar. I get their TAG, go back to 123 and change the IPS tag. Shortly after that I go to the new registrar’s site to initiate the transfer from their end. It tells me the domain is expired – which I knew. I also see that domains which are expired cannot be moved. ? So back to Muppet Central and I email them – not their problem they say, it’s now with the new registrar. Eh ? But according to most places I look, domains must be valid and within a certain time limit before they can be transferred – so why did 123-Reg fail ? Why didn’t their system both stop me changing the IPS tag AND stop the new registrar’s request ? Why ? The answer is because they are complete incompetents. If they can’t deal with something as basic as this, then why trust them with anything else ?

Thankfully, the new registrar has a decent phone support line, staff who DO know what they are talking about and staff that are capable of rectifying the mess that 123-Reg made. New registrar: Freeola. Why ? Because years ago I used to buy lots of computer games from a company called Special Reserve. Same people. New name. They were great back then and I have no reason to believe otherwise now.

Domain Registrar

11:07 Tuesday 21 Feb 06

Wanted: A registrar that can look after .uk domains, that supports opt-out or better still anonymity and that has a personal recommendation.
Once I’ve moved 2 domains, I’ll talk about the one I’m with ….

Gimme 5p !

23:32 Wednesday 25 Jan 06

If everyone who visited the /wordpress page last week gave me 5p, I could buy a PSP and a couple of games. If it was pageviews too I could buy a gadgetygizmoshinydoodad too. C’mon, cough up :)

By this time tomorrow, google’s analytic code will be gone. Too depressing. Interesting though … must save the details.

Looking at stats

07:27 Friday 20 Jan 06

I’ve had a week of Google Analytics now, so I’ve just perused the pie-charts that it offers. How can people get excited about this stuff ? Main purpose was to find out which pages in the /wordpress directory were being most viewed so I could look at them to see if they could be improved and if they were generating forum traffic – forum traffic being an indicator that they are not good enough. The page which gets the highest hits generates about 1 post a month to the forum – that’s a fraction of one percent. No work to do there then. What surprised me was that every page still gets views and that for some fairly basic pages the number of views were high. Another week and I’ll pull the code from everywhere but here.
