How The Times lives

11:44 Tuesday 28 Feb 06

In an article today, the raising of the duty free limit is covered. In there, it states that the current €175 is being raised. It also says:

The current limit of €175, set in 1994, has been widely derided in Britain as ridiculously low, being little more than the price of two quality shirts or an ordinary watch.

€175 is £120. A shirt at £60 each ? I could maybe understand that one (at a great big push) but an “ordinary” watch at £120 ? No way. A very quick look at H Samuel shows over 300 watches below £100 and there will be other shops the same, so and “ordinary” watch at that price ? Grief, how the other half live eh ?
(I use a Swatch Skin Chrono. Not over £120)

Sainsburys’ customers are the stupidest

21:16 Monday 13 Feb 06

Had cause to go into Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys today. (And I know I’m going to get the ‘ all in the wrong place but I don’t care). I needed to look at the DVD sections. that’s all. Not difficult. Not a huge challenge.
Tesco – nip in, scoot along aisle, come back checking along the way. Apart from dodging the 16yo girls all pushing their offspring along through the doors, it wasn’t too bad.
Asda – manage to get past the squad of ‘greeters’ and avoid swearing at the people who fail to understand that when it says EXIT and I’m going OUT that I have RIGHT OF WAY and will not be tutted at.
Sainsburys – FFS. (1) How many 4×4′s in a carpark ? In the biggest flattest carpark for miles ? Whassit for – to protect the slap you just ploughed your faces through ? (2) Orange. puke. (3) DVD aisle. Woman with child in tow. Sorry – woman with stupendously bored child who wants to go <— way while woman wants to —> way. I couldn’t give a sh*t so long as I could get past. Eventually spy a gap and bounce through. Need to check the other side of the display ‘thing’. Guy about 50 and with a waistline double his age. He is not moving so slowly I can nip past. Neither is he moving so quickly I can stay behind him and check. He is moving at precisely the pace of an Irritating Bast*rd. He never quite got IN my way, but neither did he move out of my way either. He was just a constant presence where he was most decidedly not wanted. And given my skillful use of body language and deep intakes and sharp outtakes of breath this guy would have had to had the IQ of a sticklebrick not to have noticed. So yes, Sainsburys ? Shopping for Stupid People.
And nowhere had what I wanted either. Bollocks.

Games Web – excellent service

14:07 Saturday 10 Dec 05

I post enough about places and people that do not provide good service – this should balance things.

Games Web are superb – I cannot fault them. A couple of years ago I ordered stuff from them over the phone and over the web and it was always delivered promptly – often the day after ordering despite them just using Royal Mail. Two days ago I rang to order – the line was busy. The recorded voice said to leave a message and I’d be phoned back. I was. The owner (I presume) checked the stock and was perfect over the phone – knew what he was doing, pleasant, no faffing about. And this morning, less than 48 hours after making the order it arrived in perfect condition. Over two years and the service is just as high – that makes this an excellent place in my books.
And it was something similar to the Tinker’s Bell here. If you are after something to give this range of forged steel puzzles are excellent in every respect. Games Web – damn good.
