XP not Vista

13:25 Wednesday 22 Nov 06

The Register has an interesting piece on the Vista EULA. How to not get the wary to buy it. And if Microsoft get to use that, who else will? It’s not like other OS developers do not pose restrictions is it? To save the hassle though – and reduce the wait – those nifty swedish guys have just the right signposts – thepiratebay+windows+vista. Not that I can see me running Vista – XP does me just fine and none of my software is locked in to anything coming down the pipe from them. Though one would hope that in the intervening period from now to the XP cut-off someone would make a version of linux that is actually useable (cue ubuntu fans…)

Filezilla. Random site manager list

17:48 Sunday 1 Oct 06

Filezilla. On the left of the toolbar is the site manager. Just next to that is a small arrow which when you click it a drop-down of all your sites appears. Now maybe I have a wrong setting but WTF is it in random order? I cannot – and believe me I have tried – get it to display in alpha order but it won’t. I’ve searched with google, I’ve searched sourceforge, I’ve searched google groups and it is not even mentioned. It’s this sort of detail which drives me nuts – and if it wasn’t for the fact that I cannot find an automated way to turn Fz’s exported .xml file into something another ftp program will swallow then I’d have a “free” copy of something else running. If I cannot get this sorted then I will indeed wear the eyepatch. Anyone got a clue?

2 things about email

21:37 Saturday 16 Sep 06

I installed Roundcube today and it has “Prefer HTML” checked. Thunderbird when you create a new email account by default makes it HTML as well. Why? HTML mail is evil nasty stuff. So why do they do it?

GMail puts new mail on the top. Roundcube does. I have Thunderbird set to have new mail at the bottom. So I try to flip it round – but I can’t get threaded mail to display “the wrong way up” and it would look strange too. So I scroll down on some which is confusing or scroll down on all which can get to be a lot in some mailboxes. I think somewhere I’m missing a setting….

Beta3. Third time. No joy.

23:25 Saturday 29 Jul 06

The laptop had a good sort today. Loads deleted, defragged, scanned – the whole lot. Works as well as it can. Reading a few feedbacks about IE7 I thought I’d give it a whirl. I’d tried it when it first hit beta and it didn’t work. This time it still does not work. I can install in Safe Mode, with the AV on or off and all I get when I click the icon is a brief flash before it dies. Even the system logs give me no clue.
Scanning the ‘official’ newsgroups I see repeated scenarios with many others – and not one consistent solution. They talk about safe mode, about AV, about re-downloading dll’s, removing flash and shockwave, removing Google toolbars, Yahoo toolbars and other strangeness – it’s a beta3 – it should be about ready. It should ‘just work’.

Been playing with K-Meleon the past few days. Very nice. Very fast. Makes me wonder how much I might have slowed Firefox down with the extensions I use – which aren’t that many, only 21 – but there’s fast and then there is ‘fast enough and as functional as I want’. Firefox fits the latter.

A police helicopter has been circling around the motorway junction a few times as I’m writing this. No doubt it’s car thieves again – it’s damn noisy! How do people not know there is a helicopter about? They make a hell of a racket.

Memory hogging

21:30 Monday 5 Jun 06

Seen in a Mozilla newsgroup:

“Firefox memory hog! Anyone know a GOOD FIX for this?”

“Sure! Use Thunderbird too. Then you won’t mind FF using it’s share because TB uses twice as much…”

Made me laugh :)

I’ve still got that copy of in.scribe I bought which I ought to tackle again…..

Bad bird

15:50 Monday 22 May 06

Thunderbird is annoying me hugely right now. Yesterday it decided that it wanted to use a cached password from sometime ago (a problem which before resulted in my completely removing and reinstalling TB) and despite clearing every password – annoying in itself (if only I used 1 password for everything online would be so much simpler…) it refused to accept a new password. Eventually after much cursing it did. Then today it decides the smtp sender is wrong. But it isn’t. Change smtp .. works then stops. Stupid program. So I want another. Outlook isn’t on the agenda. Roundmail looks really nice but it can’t filter and do more which is hardly a criticism given it’s young status. Things like Eudora, Mulberry, OE, Calypso, The Bat I’ve tried and disliked so I’m leaning toward Horde. Webmail. When I don’t need to even use Webmail. Given the niceness that is Mozilla Firefox, why is Mozilla Thunderbird so damn clunky? Right now, 4 tabs FF is ~70MB usage. Thunderbird is ~58MB. The numbers themselves mean little as the system can handle it but that much? Maybe I haven’t found Thunderbird Lite .. must go look.

Google’s Notebook

Got a PC? Don’t use this notebook thing – use Evernote. It might not go everywhere with you but it’s small enough to autosave to USB and it’s not going to be searched by anyone else. It’s very neat indeed. And free.
