What makes you happy ?

Wasn’t sure how to frame the little guy given the backdrop… and yeah, the grass needs mowing :)

I bit the bullet and installed Gallery again, imported all the images from Zenphoto(s) and nuked all other photo dirs. I really like Zenphoto because it’s light and there is nothing there I’m not using. But having just one cache directory for all the albums wasn’t working – I had a problem with something a while ago and going into that directory caused problems due to the number of files. Less files and more zp installs? Possibly…. but Gallery is now where all my online photos. The hiding of albums seems useful and I’ve yet to get link in there that leads out of there – later maybe.

And ages ago I pondered how to organise my images. I just bought ACDSee 9 after checking out trial code. And now I being careful in trying to create as many if not all of the categories I’ll need to classify the images I know I have. It’s pointless charging through adding willy-nilly because it’ll be just as much a mess as it is now, if not worse. So that’s not the quickest of tasks – especially as I’m looking through pictures while pondering and they take me off on other tangents too.

I don’t know about the ‘rule of thirds’ (though I did read up on it – thanks Terry) but out of some random clicking earlier I really like this. I can see a variety of things in it – a claw, a crane, lights, fireworks….

I’m taking more and although it’s not as many as some, it’s growing quite fast. So I need to get a grip on it. I want them more organised and here is what I think so far:
Get on one of these photo albums
Before I do anything with that, organise my photos into folders by date.
Then using the software go through and categorise/tag/whatever so I then have a date-based set and also another based on how I sorted them. That seems to me to be the best way to do it. Is it?

I dislike things like picasa – and probably others – which just search the HD and then display. For backup purposes that is a mess. I want to know it’s all in one folder.

I’ve got a lot of much older images (on photocd) which I could bring in if I get the organisation right. If you’ve cracked this sorting, does my way sound okay? I’m sure it’s not far off but learning from your mistakes is cool by me :)
