A diversion from work

23:17 Tuesday 3 Apr 07

I have blogged a few times today, and each time – bar the 1 ‘Test’ – the post was eaten by an AYS. About time svn threw a problem at me…. textarea backup and greasemonkey will hopefully see this inconsequential post through.

Anyone recall ‘Emily’ from that truly dire ‘How to blog’ nonsense? She spammed my last post. Claimed I had linked to her. Hmm…. doubt that. This was a woman who freaked out of her tiny little tree when someone I knew made a numbered list of WP themes as she claimed that idea was hers and only hers and and and….. and now she is spamming. Need to catch up a bit there dear – I don’t think the bad guys need a ‘How to spam’ guide and you aren’t even high enough in that food chain for Akismet. Yet.

Just before the New York stock market closed on a Friday, a buyer acquired 11 million shares of an obscure penny stock. After a weekend of spam, the stock touted in these messages ticked upwards in the first few minutes of trading on Monday, just enough to net the spammers about $20,000 for their weekend’s rampage. The Register

So that’s why they happen…..

And the latest WP versions are out – upgrade!

Rowan cleanses his soul

12:42 Saturday 24 Mar 07

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York are leading a procession through London to mark the 200th anniversary of Britain’s abolition of the slave trade. BBC

Okay, so far no problem I guess.

Dr Williams said it was a way Anglicans could try to heal “historic injustices inflicted in the name of the Church”.

So…. the Church inflicts injustices on many people for many years and for the church to be cleansed of all blame and sin all it takes is a stroll with some mates and much ego-inflation?

Dr Williams writes in the walk’s programme: “This important anniversary, when we recall both the shameful history of the slave trade and its modern legacies, presents us with an opportunity to open up that past to the healing power of Christ.

And that means that by the end of the day absolution will be complete and they can start again?
And why wait for the 200th? Why not have done this last year? or before then?

Inane.

A long day

18:23 Thursday 1 Mar 07

One of the two drives in the Dell has started to rumble. It’s got slowly noisier over the 6 years which is to be expected I assume but sorting some music for J the second drive rumbled as it did it’s work and yesterday I caught rhythmically rumblimg over time. So I assume something is getting old… backup time. And then to think about a new box. Can’t be a mini – there are various win-only games on it which are needed. But 6 years isn’t too bad.

Work got a bit busy last night so Uma helped me through the night with Kill Bill 1 and 2. And then I started the utterly brilliant Once Upon a Time in America. Love that film. But I got some way past the Intermission before sleep finally won me over. Good night’s viewing.

And another parent’s evening type thing for D a little earlier. Usual “Yes she’s great, wonderful, pleasure to be with etc etc”. Which is good even if it’s also boring after all these years :) Her desire for blue freckle tattoos as a ‘reward’ isn’t in the plan though. Not my plan.

And J has been discharged from the Eye clinics. She is as good as they can get her. The Cardiac people did that a little while ago. Now all we need is Neurology to do the same :)

The eve of TD the DVD

19:19 Sunday 18 Feb 07

4 months ago I said Akismet had stopped 27,000 spams. I’ll crack 100,000 this week. It’s certainly piling in.
So tomorrow….. plumber coming to mend the hot water which stopped overnight, insurance assessor coming to view the damage from the burst pipe and no doubt to see if we were lying, builder/plasterer around to quote us for a different way of some slightly different mods downstairs for J and I’ve got the GP for blood tests. And all this gets in the way of the most important event tomorrow – the DVD release of The Departed. Ignore those fools on Amazon who didn’t give it 5/5 and anyone else who disagrees. It’s a Damn Good Film.

Wii tennis. Finally took some time to play. I have a wicked cross-court backhand, the forehand shot of the same is good too. I’m not yet sold on everything – some shots which I definitely did not do crept in with the guy at the net. And one shot that was coming toward me bounced AWAY. It was coming straight at me, hit the centre line and turned left! Very odd. I need to work out the timing so when I’m doing cross-court rallies I can then belt it down the tramlines. There must be a way so I just need to work on that timing.

Women and makeup. This is either really good or very scary. (seen in Reddit)

Title. Remember the Title.

I was going to blog some more about the mac but ….. anyway, I bought Transmit. If Claire says it’s good, it’s good. Given the number of site details to transfer I didn’t want to do it twice and also Transmit was a shade under $30. As I’ve mentioned before that’s my “Just buy the thing” price so I did. Looks good and has performed well so no disappointment there.

And I never quite got to the ‘Go Sleep’ point last night so I’m paying for it now. And I ate some chocolate covered coffee beans earlier which are also making me feel ill. Not so good.

Orion above

02:12 Friday 26 Jan 07

There’s a field where I take Winston for a walk. Part of that field is down a track and it has a sunken area in the middle. Standing in that cuts most of the light out so the sky and starts can be seen really clearly. I like Orion. I’ve always liked that constellation I suppose because it is so easy to identify. The MIB reference just adds to the coolness too. Anyway, as I type this it’s just after 7pm and I could be back home at 7pm one evening and out with the beast, standing in that field looking at Orion. And here I am in Mexico where I just stood outside in the dark looking at Orion.
I know the explanations. I know how it all works but that sort of thing seems so odd, makes the wonder of the world and space all so real. It’s like looking at the sun setting, or the moon and knowing that someone half the world away can see the same thing at the same time. It makes the world so huge yet maybe so small too.

Close to the sun

20:26 Wednesday 17 Jan 07

The guys at abody have the knack of getting my full attention. It goes along the lines of “We’ve got you in for some tattoo work tomorrow and we can chat about the new gallery then”. So I’d better get a gallery installed….. not sure about the lack of time and being in the sunshine but I’ll factor 20 the whole lot.

In case you were wondering what with all the things that seem to be happening here and there in blogging arena I had an email conversation with Root. It really is him. He told me information that only he and I knew so there is no doubt. It is he :)

And I want to get some thoughts together on this machine. I’m still using it and I still like it. Yep. It does what I need.

A river of diamonds

21:59 Tuesday 26 Dec 06

There is almost an exodus from the north when looking at the M1. The occasional car going north but it looks like several rush hours at once going the other way. By far the busiest I’ve seen it. Tomorrow is just a regular day then.
This “day off work” stuff is good though. I’ve got quite a few things done here, on freshlypressed and on wp.com. I should have more time away. I had my eye on a laptop too and hoped it would drop in the sales but alas it did not…. D completed her “Let’s get the laptop to be mine” mission a little while ago and as a mark of her success it now has The Sims installed. All of them. That sets in stone the change of ownership…..
