Snitching on Mail.

I installed Little Snitch on the mini for amusement. It requires a restart. On that restart LS shows Mail.app wanting to make several outgoing connections.
I don’t use Mail, I’ve never used Mail, I’ve never run it, I would never run it. I have never given it permission to run, it’s not in my login items. So wtf is it doing running? Is this one of those ‘Apple knows best’ moments? I probably can’t install it – like so many other Apple apps it seems – but I’m certainly out now for a way to cripple it into submission – it will not connect.

Think Secret closes. So Apple nail a site that publishes about them. That’s a company nails another for free speech. That’s a company nails another for printing information others freely give. Still, they make shiny shiny stuff so it’s all okay really eh?
So, where are the fanboys saying this is so good, so great wonderful, a victory for Steve Jobs, that Think Secret was evil all the time and they knew it? They must exist though, yes?

Update: They exist! One says it’s no problem there are lots of other sites. That’s a bit like shooting someone and saying there are plenty more fish in the sea. And the other one thanked a deity. Do they not get it?

Update 2: Both macs have locked up to the point where the power button was needed. Two machines crashing. It knows what I think……

Please can you stop making shiny toys for your adoring zealots and instead find 5 minutes to write decent mouse drivers. In this arena Microsoft comprehensively thrashes you. As Pirelli once said “Power is nothing without control” and Apple mouse control sucks donkey sized ones.

Is a fairly old one at Lifehacker – A guide to switching to a Mac. Some good comments there and here are a couple of choice cuts:

On why the Apple mouse has only one button: “I also heard a rumor/story that users were confused on which button to use, so Apple simplified it by removing the second button.”

How to handle getting a new Mac:
1. sell it on ebay
2. build your own pc or linux box

After using both for a number of years, I have to say I find the PC more intuitive.

You really don’t need to close applications on the Mac. If you closed all documents and the application is not processing something in the background (which will be the case unless you want it to), it will be swapped out of memory and will not interfere. Don’t let old school Windows memory management make you think you need to quit apps – launch once and leave open and you’ll be fine…

Never again do I need to quit anything! How damn great is that eh?
Starting now I’m not going to quit anything at all. I shall let you know when the machine keels over. Given it slows and needs rebooting at least every 2 days I somehow think my quitting must be responsible – foolish of me.. tut tut.. bad ex-windows user.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog reports on iTunes DRM-free music.
PC Advisor reports on the fact your name and email are embedded in that DRM-free music.

The “Why worry if you have nothing to hide” argument is garbage – it’s a nasty thing to do.
Yet another reason to not buy an iPod or anything from iTunes.

(Now what is needed is some code that simply replaces whatever is there with the name/email of Steve Jobs, or the CEO of EMI)
