Repair and defrag.
12:34 Sunday 25 Nov 07
So last night I repaired the OS using the original CD, I removed all those junk files which programs leave behind when you uninstall them, I reset various caches and “optimised” (defragged) the system. All those things I did on the mac because it’s getting slower. Funny, Mac users will tell Windows users that there is no registry to worry about, program uninstall completely, that defragging does not exist in the World Of Apple, that it stays fast. So why do programs like Cocktail and Onyx have daily weekly and monthly scripts? “Just works”. Yeah, right.
(So if this does not work I’ll reinstall Tiger)

Well. The library folder doesn’t have the problems that the registry does, because it’s simply a folder, like any other folder, other than it’s called the Library and not Documents. Those scripts you’re referring to are the same ones that os x runs by default at night. The apps were just made for people to manually run them if they keep their machines off or something.
Funny, you bitch and moan about stuff, and yet you bought two macs now, and seem to hate them. iTunes sucks, macs are slow, osx isn’t any better than windows, i want winamp, fine then, use windows. And defragging is built into HFS+ the way I understand it, and so it never needs to be done (which is why disk utility doesn’t include it.) I dunno what you mean by you reparied the OS, because all you could do is an archive and install, i believe, and whatever.
One thing, how many fonts do you have installed? I have around a thousand… I keep majority of those disabled, because having a lot of fonts makes logins slow as it has to look at all of them..

I do bitch about macs.
Partly because after years of being fed the “PCs are crap, Macs are wonderful” line I feel the need to set that right. And partly because I do not find them as fast as the PC. That’s a PC with less memory and a slower processor.
Fonts? No idea. My PC has all of them.
Scoble wrote a piece about macs recently – I agreed with every letter of his post.
I ran the Onyx maint program. It said the volume needed repairing. Using the original OS cd I ran Disk Utility and it too said the volume needed repairing. I never had to do that in XP so either there is an equivalent or OS X was corroding.
Onyx / Cocktail both ‘optimise’ the system. In Windows I did that by defragging and cleaning the registry. In both cases something needs doing to keep everything good – and when I just used a PC I was continually told “Macs don’t need to do that stuff” and they very clearly do.
I can open the laptop after it has been sleeping and find a non-responsive system. I have had more application lockups since using the mac than on the PC. My uptime on the PC has been better than the mac.
I couldn’t have a pop at macs until I had used one. If they had lived up to the non-stop hype that pours on from Apple and it’s fanboys then I’d have been impressed and I too would have joined the cult. But they are fallible, it’s not Apple’s fault and when they release an update that makes this machine unstable it must of course be entirely forgivable. Microsoft doesn’t get off so lightly – so why should Apple? And Apple make software for how many models?
iTunes does suck.
Macs are not better than PCs. They are different.
My machine of choice? PC.
My OS of choice? XP
My probably future OS? Ubuntu

So if you knew you didn’t like OS X on the mini, why’d you buy a $2,000 macbook pro when that money could have gone to better things, like your kids’ education?
I don’t use Onyx or Cocktail, but I do have MacJanitor, however in the six months i’ve had this machine i’ve never ran it. And this mbp runs great.
For the record, my old iBook G4 was faster at some things, such as photoshop batch jobs, than my 2.6ghz HT P4 with twice as much ram.
Funny, I’ve never had a problem with sleeping and it being locked up on wake. And I hardly ever shut my machine off, I always sleep it when I go anywhere.
The only reason my uptime isn’t in weeks, months, on this machine is that os x doesn’t have a hibernate feature and I open windows to play the games I’ve bought on it.
Why does iTunes suck? Because it’s made by Apple? I used to use winamp, because it was the best one on windows. Then Apple released iTunes for windows.. Winamp left my system.
Fine then buy a dell, save whatever money it is different, and be happy. The funny thing is, most people using macs use them because they like them. Most people using windows? Because they have to.

OS X has it’s problems just like Windows does.
I am saying it as I experience it.
No more, no less.

I have a Dell. It’s coming on 7 years old, never had a problem. Would I buy another? Yes.

So why didn’t you? Oh, and I never said that OS X didn’t have problems. I don’t recommend it to everyone, unlike some people do. And when someone does choose to try it, I tell them problems they’ll encounter.. But for me, I get so much more done on a mac than I ever could on a windows box in the same amount of time..
