Ripping recommendations?

I just got a 500gb My Book and I’m looking to rip the remaining of J’s music (that’s a LOT of music). I’ll be ripping in Windows. I’ve used CDex and have heard of Musikcube, Media Ripper and apparently Winamp does it. Know of any good others? (iTunes just is not a choice either). I need cddb tagging. The bitrate will be good enough in any, but CDDB lookup + correctly applying those tags is essential. I seem to remember problems with cddb at some point but I forget what. Is there better than CDex?

My first recommendation would be to get another hard drive. I found the WD MyBook unreliable, I blogged about it (http://www.tomrafteryit.net/western-digital-my-book-pro-edition-ii-sucks/) and have received hundreds of comments from people with similar experiences!

I’d heartily reccommend Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/)… you can use the LAME encoder for MP3 (probably the best), or if I were you I’d rip to FLAC for the lossless, then you have it digitized in the best possible way and can convert to others. It’s also been pretty good for me in terms of tagging in the past, and i’ve some obscure stuff!

Tom – I’d not seen your post… Right now I’m copying files to it so I’ll give it some sort of test. I briefly checked the comments at ebuyer and Amazon before buying. Going back though, I see the same number – almost the same ratio – for 1 stars for the Seagate 500. So I don’t know where to look and my guess is I’ll find the same reviews / experiences elsewhere. From what I have seen on this blog, the good stuff never gets linked to but the bad stuff (PC World…) gets lots of comments and hundreds of views.
So part of me says fake an error and get it swapped. But the other part says to swap it for what?
This is going to be solely for backups. It will contain zero unique content. The “plan” being that at any one time I have 2 copies of everything.
Not so clear when you find this stuff out afterwards :)

It’s hard to know how to really test a drive – maybe you can’t til it dies.
It’s had 100gb written to it, verified the copy, ran a full checkdisk, machine was rebooted (so with all that it got pretty hot), it’s gone to sleep and woken several times.
So far, can’t fault it. So far…..
