Open feeds in a new window
09:03 Tuesday 7 Aug 07
So opening new windows from your site is a bad thing - I get that and I agree with that. It’s irritating when it does so. But I think there’s a case for an RSS link to open in a new window.
Currently:
Find interesting blog
Click Feed link
Go to ‘add to Google reader ?’ page
Click to Add
Click again to Add
Wait for feed to load to be able to click the title to return to the blog
That’s clunky. I don’t read a full blog before adding it to the feed list, and I don’t always remember to ctrl-click. I know this last is my fault but making feeds open in a new tab/window means I get to stay in the blog and I also get a tab to deal with the feed. Make sense?
Maybe there’s a GM script…

Ok this is obviously unrelated to your post, just wanted to say thanks for your comment on my blog :) I appreciate it a lot.
Since you are so wise, do you have any advice on getting rid of coldsores in the ‘tingly’ stage? I think I’m sprouting one… :(

I have an add-on that allows me to open a new tab with a middle click on the mouse or clicking both buttons on the laptop mouse pad. It may only be a Windows add-on though? I think its called either Mouse Gestures or TabBrowser Preferences.

Hmm Interesting! I guess I normally use right-click and then open in new tab anyway… so I guess I like links that doesnt take me far away. When you go to a page, you want the content there. Finding a link is cool but somehow moves your focus away from the original task. That’s why I like to remain at the page I came to.
Keep up the good blogging!

Well, the feed should be listed in your blogs meta information, so human beings should never have to muck with it directly. This argument is academic.
Anyway, just because Google Reader has a crap interface for subscription doesn’t mean that everyone’s experience of subscribing to a blog is like yours. I use the Google Reader “subscribe” bookmark, so when I’m on a blog I like I click “subscribe” and go through the links you describe and then click on the blog URL to navigate back, or click the back button. If I really want, I could middle-click the subscribe link.
I think you should let your feeds be, and avoid making decisions about your blog based on Google Reader’s clumsy interface.

Designate a feed reader in your browser and you’ll solve this issue. I click a feed link in the Firefox address bar and it automatically opens up in my feed reader without disturbing my current browsing session.

Yup, I use the “Subscribe” bookmarklet for Google Reader too, maybe it can be adapted to open in a new tab?
The code is: javascript:var%20b=document.body;if(b){void(z=document.createElement(’script’));void(z.src=’http://www.google.com/reader/ui/subscribe-bookmarklet.js’);void(b.appendChild(z));}else{location=’http://www.google.com/reader/view/feed/’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)}
If that helps anyone.. if you get a solution for this, please post it.

I can open the “Subscribe” button in a tab any time I like by clicking on it with the middle button. I love having that flexibility. If you do not have a middle button on your mouse, I wholeheartedly recommend the technology!
