Gallery. Clear as mud

Menalto gallery. That’s the piece of software that hasn’t been anywhere near any usability testing whatsoever. It’s amazingly obtuse. There has to be an alternative – someone must have created something that can work and can do so intuitively.
It’s astoundingly bad.
Need a gallery? Avoid Menalto.

It is pretty chunky (50MB once installed). It’s rather painful to install too.

I used gallery and really didn’t like the functionality, even though it is 50 megs! All kidding aside, in terms of server side gallery programs, I have always liked 4images as it works the best for me!

usability testing: prolly just don’t have the right users ;-)
usability testing: like the usability testing of WordPress?

I have long looked for a good image management system and was already determined to write my own (based on PHP5 + Symfony) because everything I came across appeared to be little more than a dirty hack when I found Menalto Gallery.
From my experience, it is fast, very robust, intuitive to use and – something I couldn’t care less about – easy to install. And the code is just beautiful, instead of the usual big-ball-of-dirt PHP chaos these developers have invested in a clean and testable architecture.
I’m quite baffled seeing such a contrasting opinion ;-)
