What makes you happy ?

Lot of ram = white goodness.

In the interests of balance due to what could be called some slightly unfair posts I have made previously, I have to say that the mini+2gb ram means that it flies when running Parallels with IE7 and IE6, Firefox, Thunderbird, Safari, XChat, Skype, Adium, Coda, Ecto and Solitaire (P was playing that). Impressed I am – and 2gb really should be the minimum spec.

As an aside the mini is noisier since the work. If I turn the TV off and let silence fall I only have to listen to hear it now. Before I had to really listen :)

    • Glad you got a happy ending (aside from the extra noise). :)

I’ll be getting another gb RAM for my imac as soon as I can afford to. Could have gotten it when I bought the machine but RAM direct from Apple is really expensive – so I decided to wait a bit and go for the cheaper option.

    • Ironically, it was your posts that made me research the Mac, which resulted in buying a MacBook Pro! Oh wonderful beast it is to, kicks my old Dell D800. Now that I’ve found all the software that I regularly use, it is a dream.

    • *resists the urge to say ‘told you so’*

Seriously though, glad you are having better luck with the extra RAM… really need to get me a intel based mini at some point, the G4 is good, but starting to feel its age :)

    • never, ever, *ever* buy RAM from Apple. Always get the smallest amount you possibly can then go to cruicial (or somewhere) and get as much as you can afford/install, even if it means removing what apple supplied.

    • Claire – why is their RAM so bad? Why remove what they have put there?

AJ – I know, but seeing as they are sold with 512mb and touted as being damn good the fact it needs 2gb means somewhere Apple are at best being economical about it’s performance.

    • Apple’s RAM is ok quality wise, it’s just way to expensive!

    • When I bought my iMac you could get 1GB of Ram on one chip in one slot so you could buy a second from Crucial and just stick it in.

      Now however the options are:
      512MB RAM – 2 X 256MB chips
      1GB RAM – 2 X 512MB chips
      2GB RAM – 2 X 1GB chips

See a pattern? They are all two chip combos no matter what. If you want 2GB of RAM and don’t want to buy it from Apple you have to buy BOTH 1GB chips from the other supplier and throw away (eBay) the 2 chips that Apple give you.

BUT what if you want the 24″ model? The lowest value of RAM you get with that is 1GB again made from 2 512MB chips so if you want 2GB do you throw away 1GB apple supply and buy 2GB from Crucial or do you just buy 2GB from Apple?

      Sneaky.

This doesn’t put me off Macs, my next computer purchase will be a Mac of some description, they are just trying to protect their market.

    • I think it’s to do with Dual channel memory Neasan. You get better speed out of using memory chips in pairs, than a single bigger one… you’ll find the same on other similar spec’ed pcs

    • Mark, it’s the ridiculous prices. Sometimes it’s better to max out to what you can afford which may involve taking out what Apple have supplied. It’s not too bad in their servers and Mac Pros with multiple RAM slots when when you only have the choice of 2 slots you have to make the most of what you’ve got.
