Cleaning and speeding

XP slows.
Defrag, clean registry. I used to do this ~ 14 days. Not because it slowed, but because I used to keep the system clean and snappy.
OS X slows.
Run Onyx for full tasks. I will be doing this the same ~ 14 days. It has made an amazing difference. More so than the XP stuff.

I prefer Macaroni over Onyx for general tidying – a nice fit and forget app, not sure if Onyx can be totally automated in the same way (is a fair while since I tried it last).

Cheers Ian – Macaroni duly installed.
I really am amazed at the difference the cleaning made. What surprises me is that after years of doing this to XP I didn’t make that connection.

Can I ask what you used when cleaning up XP? I defrag once a month, and crapcleaner the rest. Any good pointers?

I used ERUNT and NTREGOPT:

Spybot
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Regseeker:

Crapcleaners registry cleaner
Hijackthis:

StartupCPL:

I got to know the core process that would be running – it was about 35 – and I’d stop any others if they started eating too much.
Sequoia

just to keep an eye on space used
I wasn’t nuts about this, and I sought out programs that started fast but I used to use the above weekly. ERUNT just did it’s thing at startup so if I did break something I could roll back. It happened a couple of times. They were the OMGWTFWTFWTF moments :)

Fab, thanks for that. StartupCPL is a “first install” item for me, as is crapcleaner. Will check out the others, particularly Sequoia.
Thanks for taking the time.
