There’s a field where I take Winston for a walk. Part of that field is down a track and it has a sunken area in the middle. Standing in that cuts most of the light out so the sky and starts can be seen really clearly. I like Orion. I’ve always liked that constellation I suppose because it is so easy to identify. The MIB reference just adds to the coolness too. Anyway, as I type this it’s just after 7pm and I could be back home at 7pm one evening and out with the beast, standing in that field looking at Orion. And here I am in Mexico where I just stood outside in the dark looking at Orion.
I know the explanations. I know how it all works but that sort of thing seems so odd, makes the wonder of the world and space all so real. It’s like looking at the sun setting, or the moon and knowing that someone half the world away can see the same thing at the same time. It makes the world so huge yet maybe so small too.

The Big Dipper does that for me too :)
No matter where I am I can look at it and it reminds me of walking up the side of my Mum and Dad’s house when I was younger and brings back all the smells and sounds associated with it.

I thought that was the origin of all the zodiac signs, the assurance of ancient seafarers that wherever they went, they’d look up into the night’s sky and see the same shapes as the loved ones they’d left behind.
