A very close friend of ours has just suffered through a nightmarish period of teacher training in Bolton - apparently it was all about filling in various forms and satisfying arbitrary bits of bureaucracy, and not so much about learning how to teach. Automattic beats bureaucratic every time.

My parents are teachers and, having had several long discussions on this topic, I'll say that being a teacher isn't a job, it's a vocation. It takes over your life and only certain people are any good at it.

The good teachers are the ones that can't see themselves doing anything else, the 'not so good' teachers are those that treat it like a job.

Er... this isn't coming out right, I'm sure you'd make a good teacher!

Anyway, it's always good to have a choice and, these days, I'd always favour flexibility over anything else. Money is all well and good but enjoy your work AND have a degree of control over the work/life balance is far more important to me these days.

Three cheers for Mark!

I'm sad you were in the U.S. and I couldn't meet up with you. Of course I was on the other side of the country.

It's a wonderful thing when you get to make a choice rather than have circumstances dictate how your life will be.

The Wordpress community is a richer place with you in it.
