How do you do yours ? I don’t mean on your computer, I’m talking about an mp3 player.

With storage space hardly being at a premium, it’s tempting to just upload everything but then is space being wasted by those tracks you either always skip or just forget ?

  1. Upload whole albums and listen religiously to every track, in the right order, every time
  2. Upload whole albums but pick and choose, inevitably ending with skipped tracks which you never get round to deleting ?
  3. Upload only the tracks you actually like ?
  4. Use Random or Playlists ?

There isn’t a best way I know, but right now I’m veering toward (3) and Playlists for things like the gym.

    • I do a mixture of all 4. Well, I always tend to upload whole albums, but make playlists on the fly sometimes too. Depends on my mood and which album it is at to whether I’d listen to every song on the album.

    • 3. All songs are rated

      Uploaded by:
A few most recently added (stuff I need to rate)
      A few Podcasts I haven’t listened to
A whole bunch of music, starting from highest rating.

This is on a 6GB iPod mini.

    • #3. I upload all the tracks off a CD, then rate the songs. I nuke ‘em off iTunes and my (10GB) iPod if they get a 1 rating.

I have a bunch of smart playlists:

      for rock/alternative music rated 4-5
      for rock/alternative music rated 3
for rock/alternative music rated 4-5 that I haven’t listen to in the past two weeks
for R&B/Rap/Hip-hop rated 4-5 (that I listen to once in a blue moon)
      Podcasts I haven’t listened to

I’m way more religious about keeping my iPod clear of any stuff I won’t listen to.

    • Only put on whole albums that I like.
Make playlists of individual tracks that I like.
Generally tend to listen to a single album for a week/month etc till I get bored.
Every so often, purge, and start from scratch!

    • New albums get uploaded in their entirety to give me to time to listen and rate (never rate on a first listen, you might just be in the wrong mood).

Playlists feature, most hand crafted, some smartlists (iTunes).

      So.. eh… a mixture I guess

    • I’ve uploaded all of my favourite albums but I’m not heavily into music so I don’t have that many. Then I pick and choose, and I make playlists. But being fickle, I delete playlists when I get fed up with them. I find iTunes really useful (I’ve got a Shuffle).

    • I’ve only got 128MB so just stuff I like, and the built in radio as backup.

    • My MP3 player (iPod) still has more storage space than I have music, so I just throw my entire library on it and set it to “shuffle”.

    • No mp3 player here. I feel like I’m living in “prehistory land” after reading all those entries.

    • I have a 1GB noname mp3 player and tend to rotate through my favourite 10 albums.

On my PC I have about 30GB of mp3s to choose from, but generally I still listen to the same 10 or so albums. I’m quite boring really.
