WordPress just happens to be an excellent "gateway" to a beginner learning to build dynamic pages, using a scripting language, and since all of WordPress works just fine, a lot can be learned by looking at how it works, alone.
Then there is the fact that there is no community like the WP community (of which you are the axle :) ).
I started learning PHP about the same time I started using WP, and at no point have I felt discouraged, or even neglected by the WP community. This, in my opinion, is one reason why WP is a superior blogging tool -- In addition to getting a spankin' neat blog system, you also get to learn PHP, one of the most popular scripting languages, a transferable skill, if I may say so.
You are totally right about the "Hello World" thing, too :)

Wow, this is a very insightful blog  It actually inspires me to get out there and learn php finally. I've been putting it off for awhile for the basic reasons you have stated; being overawed.
